From documentaries to sci-fi thrillers to action epics and – finally – the return of 'White Lotus'!
A new month of television is upon us. Sure, there are shows you’re probably well into the middle of watching week to week, whether it’s the soothing Abbot Elementary or the high-wire, high-octane action of Rings of Power or House of the Dragon. But what about new things to watch? Fans of the first season of The White Lotus will be thrilled to learn that the second season is coming out at the very end of this month.
Here are the fresh series we are excited to binge in October.
1. Interview with a Vampire
Where can I watch it? On AMC
The Halloween streaming releases are out in full force in October, with plenty of spooky season viewing on offer. This Interview With A Vampire remake is one such example, a new adaptation of Anne Rice’s book that was made into a film starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst in one of her earliest onscreen roles in the ‘90s. This new iteration stars Australian Sam Reid as vampire Lestat – we fell in love with him in The Newsreader last year – and we will definitely be watching.
2. Bling Empire, Season Three
Where can I watch it? On Netflix
This Netflix reality series is one of our most guilty (and most enjoyable) guilty pleasures. It follows the rich and famous in the Asian community in California through their journeys with love, work, friendship and family. It’s easy viewing and always fun. You’ll gobble up a third season in a weekend.
3. The Midnight Club
Where can I watch it? On Netflix
From horror aficionado Mike Flanagan – he’s the creator of Netflix’s other impeccable spooky offerings, including Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House series – comes The Midnight Club. The series is an adaptation of a ‘90s novel about eight young patients in a hospice who meet in the dead of night to share spooky stories. Given how popular Flanagan’s other Netflix offerings are, you can bet this show will be a binge-watch favourite.
4. House of Hammer
Where can I watch it? On ID
This docuseries follows the fall from grace of Call Me By Your Name actor Armie Hammer and the scandals surrounding him recently, as well as digging deep into his family history. It’s a controversial series, given that it was made without the participation of one of Hammer’s alleged victims of sexual predation. Her response to producers seeking an interview was “it is extremely inappropriate of you to exploit such a tragic, vulnerable time in many people’s lives, with no regard whatsoever for our healing process and privacy”, per the Los Angeles Times.
5. Shantaram
Where can I watch it? On AppleTV+
Based on one of the most popular books in recent years – you’ve definitely seen someone toting it around at an airport while backpacking through Europe – Shantaram is going to be one of the biggest new releases of the month. The story follows an Australian bank robber and heroin addict on the run in India in the ‘80s. Charlie Hunnam will star, with a supporting cast that includes Australian actor Richard Roxburgh. The series, which was originally set to film in Australia during the pandemic, was instead made in Thailand, standing in as India.
6. The Peripheral
Where can I watch it? On Prime Video
Chloe Grace Moretz fans from way back in the Kick-Ass days will be happy to know she has a brand new Prime Video series streaming this month. The show is set in a science fiction world in which Flynne (Moretz), a young woman living a difficult life in the rural American South, opens a video game to discover a portal into a futuristic – and dangerous – London. The creators of Westworld are behind this series, so expect twists and turns a-plenty.
7. Guillermo Del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities
Where can I watch it? On Netflix
Yet another horror series to round out October, this time from director Guillermo Del Toro, one of the most visionary filmmakers of our time, and the man who made Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water. Del Toro has assembled a stellar cast for this anthology series, including Ben Barnes, Rupert Grint, Andrew Lincoln and Sofia Boutella, all whom act in a different scary story that form part of a whole. You can ration them out in the days before Halloween – there are eight episodes in total – or you can binge the whole lot the second it drops. If you dare.
8. White Lotus, Season Two
Where can I watch it? On Binge
It’s back! White Lotus returns to Binge in October – though still as a yet unannounced date. We’ll be sure to update you as soon as it’s released. We couldn’t get enough of the first season, which recently became a multi (multi, multi) Emmy Award winning smash hit. The satire of the rich and awful as they vacationed in hawaii was so biting and on point it made us cringe. White Lotus’ second season transforms the action to Sicily, where a new set of guests – though don’t worry, Jennifer Coolidge is returning – take up residence in a seaside palazzo and hilarity, antics and misbehaviour ensues. The new cast includes Aubrey Plaza, Tom Hollander and Haley Lu Richardson and yes, this is our most anticipated new release of the month.
