7 TV Shows You Need to Watch in April 2023

From the final season of 'The Marvelous Mrs Maisel' to a new series starring Jennifer Garner.

Yes, March was a bumper month of television, with the return of Ted Lasso, Succession and Yellowjackets. But believe it or not, April is set to be just as big, with a whole bunch of brand new and returning series vying for your attention.

If you are a fan of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, prepare to bid farewell to the series you’ve loved for the past four seasons and counting, with the fifth and final offering premiering this month on Prime Video. True crime fans will be thrilled with Love & Death, the new miniseries from Elizabeth Olsen about a horrific Texas murder. And then there’s The Last Thing He Told Me, a gripping AppleTV+ thriller starring Jennifer Garner and Australian actor Angourie Rice.

Here are seven TV shows you're going to want to stream in April.

1. Beef

It starts with a road rage incident. But from there, this dark and wickedly funny Netflix comedy spirals out of control. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong star as a pair united after a near collision in a tangled web of stress, anger and revenge. The supporting cast for the series is fantastic and includes Ashley Park, Justin Min, Maria Bello and Joseph Lee. We cannot wait for this one.

2. Schmigadoon

Where can I watch it? On AppleTV+

A confession: we loved the first season of Schmigadoon, which was a tongue-in-cheek riff on the golden age of musicals starring Keegan Michael Key and Cecily Strong, alongside a who’s who of Broadway supporting talent including Ariana DeBose, Aaron Tveit, Kristin Chenoweth and Alan Cumming. The second season of the series will jokingly take place in the Schmicago universe, so expect a lot of Bob Fosse-inspired numbers and a particularly good riff on Chicago’s most famous musical number: ‘The Cellblock Tango’.

3. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel

Where can I watch it? On Prime Video

The final season of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is finally here, from creator Amy Sherman Palladino aka the woman behind Gilmore Girls. The official logline says that this season will find our charming heroine Midge closer to comedy success than she has ever previously been, and yet her dream might still be just out of her reach.

4. The Last Thing He Told Me

Where can I watch it? On AppleTV+

Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine has a knack for taking bestselling books and turning them into must-watch television shows. They did that last month with Daisy Jones & The Six and they’re doing it again this month with The Last Thing He Told Me, a thriller starring Jennifer Garner as an artist in San Francisco whose life is upended when her husband goes missing, leaving her with just one cryptic message: protect her. The her in question is her stepdaughter, the 16-year-old Bailey, played by Angourie Rice, and as the miniseries unfolds, it becomes clear that there’s more to her husband’s disappearance than meets the eye.

5. The Diplomat

Where can I watch it? On Netflix

From one of the writers on Homeland and The West Wing comes this must-watch political thriller. Keri Russell stars as a reluctant new ambassador in London, who gives us humanitarian work in order to aid the consulate during a diplomatic crisis. But there is much more to this appointment than meets the eye. Expect twists, turns and plenty of intrigue in this exciting new Netflix series, which also co-stars Rufus Sewell.

6. Love & Death

Where can I watch it? On Prime Video

If you watched the true crime series Candy on Disney+ last year, the story of Love & Death might be familiar. Both miniseries follow the real-life murder of a Texan housewife by her best friend, who was always having an affair with her husband. What makes this crime even more compelling, however, is the fact that Candy (Elizabeth Olsen) pleaded self-defence and was found not guilty. Olsen is fantastic in this series, which comes from David E Kelley of Big Little Lies and The Undoing fame. A must-watch.

7. Citadel

Where can I watch it? On Prime Video

Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Stanley Tucci and Leslie Manville star in this espionage thriller from the direction partnership who brought us Avengers: Endgame. This is an action thriller you’re going to want to tune in for, with slick production values and a high-octane plot, in which secret agents for a global network have their memory wiped after a mission gone wrong, and they’ll have to pick up the pieces in order to save the world.
