Small, Thoughtful Ways to Transition Your Home to Autumn
Cue the cosy vibes.
Saying farewell to summer = not our favourite thing to do. But despite the fact that we'll be tucking away our gauzy dresses and straw sun hats for the months ahead, there's no denying our excitement for the arrival of autumn. Aside from the thrill of snuggling up in chunky sweaters and slipping into our beloved boots, transitioning our homes to the new season is what we're most enthusiastic about.
With autumn dinner parties, the holiday season, and cold-weather evenings at home ahead, it's the perfect time to prep your space for the season. If you've set aside a budget for a few new pieces, consider staples you'll use all of the time like fresh bedding or table linens in deep, rich earth tones (more on that below). Or, if you simply need a few ideas to zhoosh up your abode with items you already have, you'll also find that in our guide.
From glowy lights to snug-as-can-be textures, kick off autumn with these autumn-friendly decorating tips.
1. Add In Cosy Lighting
Come March when the time changes and daylight dwindles earlier, having a robust supply of cosy lights you can easily flick on is a must (lamps, candles, sconces—you name it). If you're feeling especially festive, strung bistro lights can add a magical glow throughout the colder months (we love the way they look hung above a bed and over a dining table for long, picturesque dinners with friends).
2. Pivot to Deeper Tones
There's something about autumn that makes us want to embrace rich, warm earth tones in lieu of summer's rainbow brights and powdery pastels. Translate this vibe switch in your home by incorporating deep colours throughout your bedding, tableware, throw pillows, and even your bath towels.
3. Prep Your Bed For Cooler Nights
Make the adjustment from summer's warm nights to autumn's brisk evenings easier by prepping your bedding for temperature dips. Add in an extra layer like a Quilt, thicker duvets, and pile on the textural throw blankets! And if you're in the market for something new, consider switching to a deeper colour palette to reflect the snug months ahead—it'll make your bedroom feel like an oasis.
4. Do a Tablescape Sweep
While we won't deny there's nothing quite like an alfresco summer dinner party, autumn's intimate soirees are equally as fun. And in order to host friends for food and drinks over the next few months why not do a tablescape sweep? Invest in deep earth-hued table linens and placemats to set the tone and layer in lovely glass, wood, or ceramic textures.
5. Highlight the Fireplace
If you're lucky enough to have a fireplace in your home (operational or not!) you should take full advantage of this design detail by transforming it into a focal point. Place a large wicker basket by the hearth and fill it with kindling or pinecones. We also love a stylish firewood holder as an accent piece. As for the mantle, take a trip to the farmer's market and pick up sprigs of whatever's for sale (pines and ferns are always lovely) and top it off with some ceramic candlesticks for extra glow.
6. Swap Your Florals
Bid your hydrangeas and peonies adieu for now and take a trip to the flower market for beautiful bouquets of deep, rich florals. Of course, what you can make an arrangement will depend on where you live but a few of our favourites include black pansies, Persian lilies, and black satin dahlias. You can also flesh out these vases with greenery like a dramatic sprig of eucalyptus or versatile olive branches.
