For many of us, the Christmas holidays are one of the most joyous times of the year. One of the loveliest aspects of this time is having an excuse to deck your abode in magical décor that adds a bit of fun and makes you feel nostalgic.

Having a small space to work with comes with its own decorating challenges, and celebrating the holidays in an apartment or tiny home means you might not have room for the 8-foot Christmas tree of your dreams. But there are still plenty of things you can do to make your home feel festive and add some impact for the holiday season.

Below, we share a few festive décor ideas to help make your petite home feel extra cheery these holidays.

1. Pick the right size tree

It might be tempting to get a grand Christmas tree, but in a small space, they can look domineering. Because of this, it's important to select the right size and shape for your home. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 15 centimetres between the top of your tree and the ceiling, so make sure to measure up beforehand. Avoid trees that are too full and opt to narrow or slim designs that can easily tuck into a corner.

2. Create a festive bouquet

If you're struggling to make a tree work in your home, a festive bouquet may be the next best option. For a more traditional holiday display, you could opt for red roses, holly, spruce branches, pine cones, and red berries, or for a more modern take celebrate Australian flora like wattle, waratahs, or kangaroo paw. Poinsettias in a flower pot also make for a divine Christmas display.

3. Switch up your current décor

Rather than adding more decorations to your current scheme, switch them out for festive decor. For instance, change the covers of your existing cushions; this takes up zero space and will simply enliven your living room or bedroom. You could opt for Christmas tones of red, white, and green or go for an elegant gold Christmas pattern. It leaves you with the same amount of space, but with more cheer.

4. Add a festive scent
