Madeline Jovicic’s Playful New Artworks Are Inspired by European Summers

Her illustrative artworks for Bed Threads Gallery capture a Mediterranean state of mind.

Artist Madeline Jovicic is a familiar name here at Bed Threads. The Sydney-based creative’s illustrative style has graced two sell-out drops of exclusive limited edition prints for Bed Threads and, in 2021, she took us on a tour of her Mediterranean-influenced apartment and spoke to Bed Threads Journal about her creative process.

Now, Madeline is one of the inspiring artists taking part in our inaugural Bed Threads Gallery group show. Designed with those first starting an art collection in mind, Bed Threads Gallery is a collection of truly unique one-off mini paintings and extremely limited edition ceramics, all under $1,000. For this series of sought-after originals, Madeline has returned to the motifs for which she is well known – spritzes, seafood, and sun-drenched European holidays – rendered in mixed media on board and elegantly framed in Tasmanian Oak.

10 of Madeline’s original paintings will be available to purchase exclusively at Bed Threads Gallery. What’s more, two new Madeline Jovicic x Bed Threads prints based on her large-format works, ‘Buon Appetito’ and ‘Autumn Table’ will also launch alongside the collection – perfect if you’re yet to invest in an original and still want a touch of La Dolce Vita in your space.

We spoke to Madeline about the inspiration behind these artworks and how her work has evolved over the years.

Hi Madeline! We're so excited to have some of your original artworks at Bed Threads. Can you tell us what the inspiration behind this collection was?

Hello! I’m so excited to be a part of Bed Threads’ first-ever exhibition! I was so inspired by the idea of a European Summer. Fresh produce, the smell of espresso in the morning and afternoon Aperol Spritz’s.

How has your work evolved over the years?

My work was all very colourful when I started painting, and as you can see from this collection it still very much is, however, I’ve been experimenting more with darker and more moody colours lately which I’m really enjoying. I love combining these darker tones with colourful elements which you can see in a couple of the paintings in this collection.

What motivates you to create?

I create as a means to express myself. It also brings me so much joy to create these artworks. It’s also a great motivation when customers tell me how happy my artworks make them when hanging in their homes!

Who are your biggest artistic influences?

I absolutely love the work of Henri Matisse. From his early paintings and sketches to his later work including his famous paper collage artworks. I particularly find his bold use of colour inspiring. His work is still relevant today and truly timeless.
