How to Create a Minimalist Bedroom With Maximum Style
Design a calming sleep sanctuary that inspires a soothing slumber.
Minimalist design is admired for its lack of clutter and serene feel. And nowhere could this concept be more important than in our bedrooms. A minimalist bedroom is one that's thoughtful, tidy, functional, and easy on the eyes.
According to interior designer Natalie Walton whose peaceful Byron Bay hideaway we toured in our series The Makers, your bedroom should be a restorative space with simple design. "You want to ensure that it’s free of clutter and allows you to think clearly," she shares with Bed Threads Journal. "Ensure it allows you to relax, unwind and reconnect with what’s most important in your life. For me, that’s keeping the space simple: linen bedding, a simple bedside table, and a good book, always."
Below, we look at how you can create a minimalist-style bedroom with maximum style.
One misconception about minimalist design is that it lacks interest, but this needn't be the case. Incorporating classic patterns like a stripe will still adhere to a calm and minimalist design approach while also adding that extra bit of interest to a space. You could incorporate stripes in your bedding, cushion covers, or lampshade.
Either opt for neutral tones or only stick to one or two bolder colours. Too many clashing colours and patterns won’t give you the zen ambience that people love when it comes to minimalism.
One of the benefits of minimalist design is that it can force us to be more intentional with our purchases and the things we bring into our homes. If you have fewer items, everything in the room needs to be both beautiful and practical. This design approach is one way to appreciate quality furniture and accessories for longer. Before bringing new pieces into your space consider how much you love them and if they will continue to serve you for years to come.
Matching the material or colour used in your flooring with your bedside table creates a cohesive, calming look. If you want to take it one step further, match your bed frame as well.
When minimalist design is well executed it won't leave a room looking clinical and unwelcoming. One way to ensure your room still looks warm and inviting is by incorporating natural materials to the palette. Think linen, rattan, bamboo, and timber.
The enemy of minimalist style is clutter. If there are pieces in your bedroom that have been sitting unused for years, it's time to let them go and donate them if they are in good condition as they are just adding extra clutter. If it's not serving a purpose be it bringing you joy or being practical for your bedroom, it doesn't need to be in this space. If you really can't depart from an item, place it in another room.
Curved furniture is a great way to soften a space and keep it looking interesting and more welcoming. Consider items like a round mirror, circular pendants, a wavy bedhead, or curvy ceramics.
