8 Shows to Stream this September

New seasons of some of our favourite shows are back, and we cannot wait.

It's the start of fall, which means the leaves are starting to hit the ground, the weather is cooling down, we're starting to put on more layers, AND we've got a new batch of television shows to get through!

The beginning of this season typically means we'll be spending more time intside, maybe by a fire, with a cup or tea or a book, keep this list up your sleeve for when a lazy Sunday strikes (or when you've just finished the final chapter of that book).

Some of our favorite shows are returning with new seasons, while others we'll be viewing with fresh eyes – either way, we can't wait to kick back on the couch and watch what this month of streaming has in store for us.

1. Sex Education, Season 4

Where can I watch it? On Netflix

Do you want the good news or bad news first? There’s both joy and despair attached to season 4 of Sex Education. The good news is that most of our favourite Moordale High students are returning – minus Ola and Lily – and that Dan Levy will join the cast as Maeve’s US tutor. The bad news is that (deep breath) Season 4 will also be the final season ever! Series creator Laurie Nunn said she made the decision when it became clear to her that the character’s stories were coming to an end and “the characters were being left in a place that I felt really good about.” Though we’re not feeling really good about it, at least we’ll have eight new episodes to slowly bid adieu to Otis, Maeve, Eric, Aimee, Connor & co.

2. The Morning Show AKA Morning Wars, Season 3

Where can I watch it? On Apple TV+

Bradley Jackson and Alex Levy are (pant)suiting up once more to anchor the news in a third drama-filled season of Apple TV+’s hit show. Viewers were divided about Season 2’s COVID-19-focused plot – we lived it, and then we had to relive it all over again on TV?! – but Season 3 promises to deliver a lot more tea. And the new addition boiling the kettle? None other than everyone’s favourite ad man, Jon Hamm! As we know, The Morning Show already hosts two of Hollywood’s biggest names – Jennifer Anniston and Reese Witherspoon – but the cast is also bolstered by Julianna Marguiles and Billy Crudup who return for another season. Come for the news, stay for the Hamm.

3. Dear Child

Where can I watch it? On Netflix

Based on Romy Hausmann’s chilling novel, this twisted six-part German series follows Lena, a mother who was kidnapped 13 years ago and has been living in high-security housing in complete isolation with her two children, Hannah and Jonathan. Her kidnapper controls every aspect of their lives, including when they can eat, sleep, and use the bathroom. The show begins with Lena’s daring escape and unravels from there. Fans of true crime and films like The Room will be transfixed by this series.

4. The Changeling

Where can I watch it? On Apple TV+

Another day, another book-to-screen adaptation! Based on Victor LaVille’s best-selling novel of the same name, The Changeling has been dubbed “a fairy tale for grown-ups”. The highly anticipated horror fantasy series owes much of its buzz to its director, Melina Matsoukas, who also directed Beyoncé’s Lemonade visuals, eight episodes of Issa Rae’s Insecure, and 2019’s stirring film, Queen & Slim. Starring Atlanta’s LaKeith Stanfield as Apollo Kagwa, Adina Porter as his mother, Lillian Kagwa, and Clark Backo as his wife Emma "Emmy'' Valentine, this eight-episode series follows Apollo into a New York City he didn’t even know existed as he searches for his missing wife. If the trailer’s anything to go by, this one’s not for the faint of heart.

5. The Other Black Girl

Where can I watch it? On Disney+

Who doesn’t love a good book-to-screen adaptation? Even more so when it’s produced by Rashida Jones and stars Sinclair Daniel (Insidious: The Red Door), Ashleigh Murray (Riverdale) and Eric McCormack (Will & Grace). Based on Zakiya Dalila Harris’s 2021 best-selling novel of the same name, The Other Black Girl casts Sinclair as Nella Rogers, an editorial assistant at Wagner Books who feels tokenised as the only Black employee at the company. That is until Hazel-May McCall lands a gig there. But Nella’s excitement soon turns to despair as she’s overcome with what can only be described as a heavy dose of the heebie-jeebies. Think The Bold Type meets Get Out and you’ve got yourself one juicy thriller.

6. The Wheel of Time, Season 2

Where can I watch it? On Prime Video

Enter the world of magic-wielding women for the second time as Season 2 of The Wheel of Time returns. Starring Rosamund Pike, Daniel Henney, Zoë Robins, Madeleine Madden and Josha Stradowski, season 1 became Prime Video’s most watched original series of 2021, proving we’re all a bunch of fantasy fanatics looking for our next fix. Inspired by Robert Jordan’s high fantasy novels, Season 2 will draw inspo from the second and third novels in the series, aka The Great Hunt and The Dragon Reborn. Prepare for the arrival of Seachan, follow Moiraine as she returns to her hometown of Cairhien, and watch Rand rebuild his identity post battle with The Dark One. It’s all happening.

7. Top Boy, Season 3

Where can I watch it? On Netflix

Promising to ‘go out with a bang’, the Saga of Summerhouse comes to a close with Season 3 (or Season 5 if you’re counting its first two chapters pre-Netflix pickup). Drugs, money, power, and Little Simz all make this gritty UK-crime drama spin, set in the dangerous housing estates of East London. Season 2 ended with an epic cliffhanger that left most of us with plenty of questions, and by the end of the series, show creator Ronan Bennett promises to answer them all. Apparently, there will be no loose ends. Phew.

8. Virgin River, Season 5

Where can I watch it? On Netflix

From surprising new relationships and a shocking breakup, to a heartbreaking goodbye and a merciless wildfire that threatens the town – Season 5 of your favourite small town drama Virgin River is set to screen in early September. Starring Alexandra Breckenridge and Martin Henderson, the series follows midwife Mel, who is adjusting to her new life in the remote Northern California town of Virgin River. Seasons 1-4 had us on the edge of our seats – we’re ready to have our hearts rocked again in Season 5.
