From dark woods to '80s opulence, these are the looks that will define the year.

A new year has arrived, and with it, a new slew of interior design trends. Hard to keep up, isn’t it?! Don’t stress, we’ve got you covered (in two-tone bouclé, this year’s twist on everyone’s favourite fabric.)

While a focus on conscious curation and sustainability has slowed the trend cycle down a bit, there’s still plenty of opportunity to freshen up your interiors in fun new ways this year.

From dark woods to pastel bows and even a nod to luxury hotel aesthetic, here are 11 interior design trends to look out for in 2024.

1. Dark Woods

Oak, ash and maple have hogged the limelight for long enough – it’s time to let the darker hues have their moment. Rich and moody woods like mahogany and walnut will feature heavily in furniture, while chocolatey finishes will stain floors and accents, making a bold, almost regal statement.

2. '80s Opulence

Equal parts lavish and eccentric, the '80s opulence trend is all about putting the extra in extraordinary. A loud retort to minimalism, the decade of decadence is making a comeback by way of bold colour combos, fluted surfaces, kitsch florals, multi-coloured area rugs, and of course, brass – from coffee table legs to lounge chair arms and everywhere in between.

3. Personalisation

The homogenised home-trend has been stretched to its limits, like a blank canvas on a frame, yearning for a splash of colour. It’s official: monochrome-meets-everything is out, and unique, personalised spaces are in. Also dubbed ‘tailored eclectic’, the idea is a mix of old and new, with the former providing character over cookie-cutter products and aesthetics. Incorporating vintage finds and heirloom treasures into your space is key to creating an authentic home, as is showcasing your personal style through your décor.

4. Euro-Inspired

Dubbed ‘The White Lotus Effect’, Euro-inspired interiors will traverse countries and continents in 2024. While both classic and contemporary design trends fall under the Euro-inspired umbrella, the mood board’s main focus is opulent Italian castles with classical details, like rich tapestries, marble details, Grecian exteriors, and intricate ceiling medallions.

5. Return to Girlhood

Pinker than cottagecore but adorned with just as many bows, the ‘Return to Girlhood’ trend is playful, flirty, and feminine. Closely entwined with the Romanticism trend and TikTok’s ‘Coquette Aesthetic’, it plays with pinks, reds, florals, ribbons, bows, hearts, and other childlike motifs to introduce nostalgia and romance into your space.

6. Metal & Chrome

Proving that not all that glitters is gold, metallics will have their moment to shine in 2024. Stainless steel tablewares, chrome lighting, silver modular sofas – if it reflects, it’s in! Metal and chrome mania is actually already upon us, amplifying whatever vibe a room is already exuding while adding a (literal) element of cool to any space.

7. Hotel Interiors

Create the ultimate staycation by turning your house into a hotel, or at least ‘hotel-esque.’ Self-care meets laid-back luxe in this design trend that first began to sprout during the pandemic when we were all stuck at home and hotel pamperings were but a distant memory. To get the look, try incorporating luxe accom amenities and hotel design details like integrated lighting and bold wallpapers into your home.

8. Colour-drenched Rooms

The era of beige is out, and bold colour is in. Using Richard Christiansen's Flamingo Estate as a blueprint, colour schemes that mix and match shades and tones are the next interior infatuation. Gone are the days of cushion pops of colour, here is the year of colour-drenched rooms, where everything from the walls to the upholstery burst with bright hues.

9. Sustainability

While eco-conscious design is nothing new, the desire to source secondhand continues to intensify as fast fashion and mass production fall out of favour. Once again, character and personalisation come out on top, with conscious curation and the investment in long-lasting furniture pieces proving both environmentally and financially friendly.

10. Nature

With climate change as a core issue and sustainability in mind, it makes sense that natural materials and finishes will continue to trend in 2024. In homes that honour the handmade and celebrate character over cookie cutter, expect to find natural stones, marbles, woods, jute, terracotta, linen, and hempcrete (pictured here) instead of artificial aesthetics.

11. Statement Tiles

From wall to floor, make a statement in 2024! Sounds like an election slogan, but it’s the best way to describe the tile trend that looks to be everywhere this coming year. From handmade and unique to oversized and unexpected, tiles with dramatic patterns and eclectic palettes will add texture to floors and walls in kitchens, bathrooms, and beyond.
