What Is ‘Muslin’ and How to Care For It

This lightweight fabric is the easiest way to bring texture, cosiness, and plenty of style to your home.

Creating that sought-after "effortlessly chic" look in your home can ironically be, not so effortless. It often requires finding the right balance between style and comfort. One of the easiest ways to achieve this aesthetic, however, is in your fabric choices.

Muslin brings texture, cosiness, and plenty of style to your home, and we've just added it to our range in four beautiful throws.

Here's everything you need to know about this timeless, stylish, and much-loved fabric and how to care for it.

What is muslin?

Muslin is a plain-woven cotton or linen fabric that is lightweight and breathable. It gets its name from the city of Mosul in Iraq, where it was first manufactured.

Muslin is loosely woven using the plain weave method which is achieved by a simple over-and-under arrangement of threads.

It's one of the most versatile and widely used fabrics. From cheesemaking to swaddles, and dresses to medical wraps, muslin's combination of softness, breathability, absorbency, versatility, durability, lightweight nature, and natural appearance contribute to its widespread popularity.

What are the benefits of muslin?

Muslin is a lightweight and soft fabric, making it ideal for summer or layering in cooler weather without adding excessive bulk. It's also hypoallergenic, which means it's less likely to cause allergic reactions.

Muslin fibres break down into organic matter without causing harm to the environment, helping to stop the cycle of waste.

From an aesthetic perspective, muslin can add a beautiful texture and rustic-chic feel to a home, whether it's via curtains or a throw.

Made to be thrown at the end of the bed, sprawled on the sofa, or draped over your favourite armchair, our new Muslin Throws are as multi-functional as they are elegant.

How to care for muslin?

Our muslin throws are durable, and as simple to care for as the rest of our linen range! Your throw will soften and grow more comfortable with every wash, so follow these steps – and enjoy!

  • Wash before first use on a cold, gentle cycle using liquid detergent only, and line-dry where possible.
  • Wash thereafter on a warm, gentle cycle, separate from other colours.
  • Limit tumble-drying to low settings and avoid overloading the machine.
  • Do not bleach, iron or dry clean, and if your linen happens to stain, launder immediately.
  • Where possible, hang to dry.

What is the difference between our Muslin Throws and our Linen Throws?

Both of our throws make for the perfect layering tool for your sofa or bed, and a great all-purpose essential for your home. There are, however, differences between the two to cater to individual preferences.

Our heavyweight linen throws are thick-textured and make an ideal duvet substitute, picnic throw, or cosy extra layer on your bed or couch. They're available in 10 of our colourways.

Our Linen Muslin Throws have looser, more open weaves, making them more lightweight. Double-layered with a frayed edge, they come in four stunning colourways including three two-toned variations so you can switch up your look; Oatmeal, Oatmeal & Mocha, Oatmeal & Olive, and Terracotta & Hazelnut.

if you're looking for a warmer option the heavyweight throws provide the ultimate cosiness whereas Muslin Throws are perfect for hot and humid climates, and are easy to throw in a bag for travel.
