TikTok has no shortage of satisfying cleaning videos. From laundry stripping to rug cleaning, there’s always a new #cleantok hack to help make your life that little bit easier and more productive.

The latest trend that’s caught our attention is the ‘Closing Shift Cleaning’ method and it’s making us reapproach our nighttime routines. At the time of writing, #closingshiftcleaning has garnered 72 million views, and we're predicting it to be TikTok's next biggest cleaning tip.

Below, we're looking at what the closing shift cleaning trend is and how it might help set you up for a successful morning.

What is ‘Closing Shift Cleaning’?

If you’ve ever worked in hospitality or retail, you’ll be well acquainted with the big ol’ clean that happens at the end of every shift to help prepare staff for the following business day.  The ‘Closing Shift Cleaning’ method for at home takes inspiration from this very activity and aims to help make your mornings easier.

#Closingshiftcleaning was started on TikTok by @clararpeirce whose videos of her ‘closing down her apartment’ for the night went viral on the app. “I just close up my apartment like I would if I was at work,” Clara explains in a TikTok. “Sometimes it’s cleaning my entire apartment, sometimes it’s just making it 10 per cent better for the morning, so I feel like I did something to set my next day up on the right foot.”

What we love about this trend, aside from the fact it helps set you up for success the next day, is how it brings a bit of novelty to something most of us find mundane. “'Closing shift' is such a unique pov on life. Definitely gonna start thinking like this ahaha ❤️," commented TikTok user @toneretro4.

As tempting as it may be to discard any duties and head straight to bed to watch your favourite new Netflix show, dedicating time to simple cleaning tasks like stacking the dishwasher, wiping down surfaces, and taking out the trash can help you set up a clean and organised environment for the next day, ensuring a fresh start and reducing morning stress. We all know how precious those morning hours are before we kickstart our day, and having to run around cleaning everything so your home isn’t gross is possibly the last thing we want to do.

‘Closing Shift Cleaning' checklist

Everyone’s “closing shift” will look a little different depending on what their day-to-day looks like. Each evening, switch on some calming music to help you wind down and consider doing any or all of the following to help set you up for a smooth next day:

  • Load the dishwasher and put it on.
  • Do a five-minute tidy-up to of your living area.
  • Wipe down surfaces you’ve used that day.
  • Put shoes away.
  • Ensure doors are locked.
  • Ensure your keys are located near the front door for easy access in the morning.
  • Put away any makeup/products used to get ready in the morning.
  • Put away any clothes worn during the day.
