From minimalist digs to cluttered chaos, here’s what your bedroom says about you.

How we choose to keep and display our belongings says a lot about our personality, especially when it comes to the most intimate space in our homes – the bedroom.

It’s where (most of us) get changed, relax, begin (and end) our days, so how we choose to style and maintain it can be seen as a true reflection of who we are. "We all know that a bedroom can act as a safe zone, our sanctuary and somewhere to keep us grounded and calm," says psychologist and founder of Flow State Space Rashida Dungarwalla.

"Ensuring our bedroom is a positive sensory experience which includes things like it being clutter free, styled to reflect our personality, has good quality bedding, suitable lighting and is separate from work and other occupying responsibilities in our lives can have an overall positive effect on our mental health and well-being," she added.

1. Minimalist

Minimalist bedrooms usually belong to those with calm and collected minds. With their bare-bones approach to styling a space, minimal bedrooms often remain clutter-free, and usually display a neutral colour palette. People with minimalist bedrooms love peace and quiet – and want their space to evoke that same energy.

2. Maximalist

On the opposite end of the interior style spectrum, you’ll find maximalism. Known for its fearless culmination of patterns, textures, and colours, those with maximalist bedrooms love to show off their personality in a creative way. From sporting vibrant bed linen to sprawling gallery walls above ornate headboards, maximalist bedroom owners use their bedroom to express their playful personality.

3. Colourful

If your bedroom is swathed in many colours, it may indicate a creative, eclectic, and open-minded personality. The type of colour you choose to adorn your bedroom with can say a lot about your personality too. Soothing hues such as Sage, Limoncello, and Rosewater evoke a peaceful energy, while bold tones such as Wildflower, Paprika, and Turmeric inject a more playful vibe into the space.

4. Muted

For those with bedrooms that are a little more subdued, sporting subtle tones such as Oatmeal, Fog, and Mineral, your bedroom is your safe haven. You like to live life on the quiet side, and love an evening that wraps up early, with a book and cup of tea by your side.

5. Organised

Often the earliest to arrive at events with the agenda planned out on their phone, those with organised bedrooms have lives that reflect the same order in their sleeping quarters. People with organised bedrooms pride themselves on the cleanliness of their space, while also finding joy in a new way to perfectly arrange their bedside table.

6. Cluttered

Cluttered rooms usually belong to those with busy minds, people who finish work at 5 pm and are out the door again at 7 pm. Those who say yes to the early morning run, forgetting they made breakfast plans on that same day. Not to be mistaken with a messy room, a cluttered bedroom often belongs to those who don't have time to prescribe to a particular style, but let their external world influence the current state of their space.

7. Cottagecore

If your bedroom leans more on the whimsical side, you may fit into the cottagecore realm. Categorised by natural materials, antique furniture, and an emphasis on slow living, owners of cottagecore rooms like to stop and smell the roses – and maybe pick some for their new vintage vase too.

8. Retro

Laidback and fun-loving, stepping into a retro bedroom feels like a blast from the past. Made up of playful vintage pieces and kaleidoscopic patterns from the ‘70s and ‘80s, retro bedroom owners have an appreciation of timeless style and the iconic pieces that came these eras.
