5 Autumn Design Trends You're About to See Everywhere

From fallen leaves and plummeting temps to longer sleeves and shorter days, autumn means one thing across the board: change. So why shouldn’t your home reflect the seasonal shift as well?

Enter autumn 2021’s biggest interior trends. From the obvious (seasonal foliage) to the under-the-radar (your grandma’s home is trending again), there are countless trends to embrace this season that will leave your home feeling fresh, inviting, and most importantly, cosy.

Ahead, find the five autumn design trends that you’re about to see everywhere (if you haven’t already).

5 Interior Trends to Try This Autumn

1. Traditional touches

It’s official: traditional design (also dubbed “Grandmillennial”) is staging a comeback. A diametric opposite to the stark Scandinavian minimalism of the 2010s, “modern traditional” is the more layered, soulful, and warm aesthetic you’ve likely spotted on Instagram.

Marked by rich wood furniture, subtle patterned fabrics, antique rugs, and vintage-inspired or thrifted artwork in ornate frames, this modern take on traditional design adds just the right touch of warmth to a space.

Fortunately, today’s version is much more pared back than the floral wallpaper and crystal chandeliers of the classic Victorian era. Think: modern bouclé furniture, wood floors, and Noguchi-style lighting paired with an ornate gold mirror, vintage bentwood chairs, and beautiful woodwork. It’s all about the mix!

2. Texture on texture on texture

Linen. Bouclé. Shearling. Cane. Jute. Rope. Velvet. Raffia. The design world has welcomed any and all sources of texture in the last five-plus years, and we only see this cosy trend continuing into autumn 2021. It’s so popular, you can even find dressers, nightstands, and desks adorned with textural materials like grasscloth and linen.

Of course, this look is all about the layers — picture a thick jute rug topped with a bouclé couch, velvet accent chairs, hemp throw pillows, and a raffia light fixture. Embracing texture is a great way to add warmth and depth to your space this fall while still sticking to a neutral colour palette.

3. Foraged foliage

What’s the first order of business when transitioning your home for autumn? Swapping out summery greenery for dried florals and foraged branches. But rather than paying top-dollar on Etsy or heading to a local farmer’s market, designers are taking inspiration from mother nature and sourcing foliage from their very own backyards.

When the leaves begin to turn, branch cuttings from your favourite tree or bush can make for the perfect sculptural centrepiece — especially if you’re hosting a dinner party.

4. Retro lounge

We pinpointed this trend back in June of this year, and we only expect it to continue well into next year (and beyond). From burlwood furniture, funky marble, and chrome accents to curved bouclé couches and all things checker print, nearly all of the materials, silhouettes, and patterns of the moment have roots in the 1970s and 1980s.

While some designers and influencers have gone full 1970s lounge, we love the idea of adding subtle retro touches to a space in the form of curved accent chairs, marble accents, and burlwood cocktail tables.

5. Warm tones

What better time to embrace rich, warm hues than autumn? From deep browns and rusts to punchy ochre, terracotta, and blush, take notes from nature and add these inviting hues to your home this season.

You can fully commit with rich rusty accent chairs or even a rich velvet statement couch, or keep things low-lift with a few new throw pillows and decorative vases. When paired with a perfect 60-degree day, the right pumpkin candle, and a bowl of your favourite soup, you’ll have officially reached peak fall.
