1. Baby Reindeer

Where can I watch it? Netflix

The British thriller drama on everyone’s lips, Baby Reindeer is already being dubbed one of the best TV shows of 2024 – although, fair warning, it may be distressing for some viewers. Created by and starring Richard Gadd, the show is an adaption of Gadd’s hit stand-up show, based on his harrowing real-life experience of dealing with a stalker in his twenties. Dark and confronting, it’s a challenging exploration of trauma and healing through the rarely explored perspective of a male sexual assault victim.

2. One Day

Where can I watch it? Netflix

Another example of British screen excellence, One Day is the ultimate classic romance made modern. A little ‘opposites attract’, a little ‘unrequited love’, all wrapped up in a series of sort-of meet-cutes: Emma (played by Ambika Mod of This is Going To Hurt) is an awkward theatre nerd, while Dexter (Leo Woodall of White Lotus fame) is a cavalier rich kid. Following a one-night stand that wasn’t after university graduation, the two become friends and continue to cross paths on the same day each year over the next 20 years. Traversing two decades of life changes, loss and love affairs, their relationship gets put through the paces to tell a soul-wrenching love story that keeps your heart on a hook the whole way through.

3. Fallout

Where can I watch it? Prime Video

An adaptation of one of the world’s most popular video games, Fallout is a big-budget drama with a binge factor to match. Set in 2077, about 200 years after a nuclear explosion in a still-radioactive Los Angeles, Lucy – one of the lucky few ‘vault dwellers’ sent underground in an experiment to preserve humanity – is on a mission to save her abducted father. To do so, she will have to make her way through a terrifying and twisted hellscape while dodging a bounty hunter, mutated monsters and a lawless society of those remaining on the surface.

4. Boy Swallows Universe

Where can I watch it? Netflix

A coming-of-age tale based on Trent Dalton’s best-selling semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, Boy Swallows Universe is raw, poignant and undoubtedly one of 2024’s best-limited series. The plot centres around Eli Bell, a 13-year-old boy from Brisbane who enters the underworld to save his drug-addicted mother. Making the best of a tumultuous childhood despite the many obstacles stacked against him, it’s a powerful story about following your heart and finding light in the dark.

5. Heartbreak High, Season 2

Where can I watch it? Netflix

Not all reboots of iconic series are created equal, and Heartbreak High is one of the rare few that gets it right. An Emmy award-winning remake of one of Australia’s most beloved ‘90s shows the Netflix dramedy grabbed global attention when it came out in 2022 as it followed protagonist Amerie, a student who becomes an outcast after a secret ‘sex map’ causes her high school to erupt into chaos. And now the hit show is back for season two, delivering another round of teen angst, sexual discovery and heartbreak at Hartley High with all the characters – and a few newbies – we came to know and love.

6. Griselda

Where can I watch it? Netflix

Debuting at number one in 90 countries is nothing to sneeze at – a feat Griselda managed to achieve within its first week of release. Produced by and starring Sofía Vergara in her most critically acclaimed role yet, the biographical crime drama is inspired by the real-life of infamous Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco and her pursuit of power and wealth in the Miami drug scene. It’s gritty, gripping and a good six hours of edge-of-your-seat material.

7. Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Where can I watch it? Prime Video

Title sound familiar? We can confirm that this hit Prime Video show is a riff on Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s 2005 movie of the same name – but it’s far from the spy film you know. Nuanced with a number of twists, the show revolves around a married couple leading double lives as spies. In contrast to the Pitt-Jolie starrer, the show follows the couple from before they are married as they begin work for a mysterious spy agency promising a thrilling life of wealth, espionage and travel in exchange for entering an arranged marriage under new identities. Cue: feelings, complications, action – the works. What could go wrong – or right?

8. Shōgun

Where can I watch it? Disney+

If epic historical dramas are more your speed, the critically praised Shōgun is for you. Per the show’s official synopsis, the 10-episode series follows: “the collision of two ambitious men from different worlds, John Blackthorne, a risk-taking English sailor who ends up shipwrecked in Japan, a land whose unfamiliar culture will ultimately redefine him; Lord Toranaga, a shrewd, powerful daimyo, at odds with his own dangerous, political rivals; and Lady Mariko, a woman with invaluable skills but dishonourable family ties, who must prove her value and allegiance”. Besides the epic plot, the show also has quite the budget, so expect a visual feast of landscapes, costumes and sets to keep you glued to the screen.

9. Expats

Where can I watch it? Prime Video

Perfect for fans of Little Fires Everywhere and Big Little Lies, this Nicole Kidman-starring series explores the intersection of race, class and grief via three affluent American women living in Hong Kong. Based on the book The Expatriates by Janice Y.K. Lee, Kidman plays protagonist Margaret Woo, a wealthy woman whose life is turned upside down after her youngest son goes missing during a nighttime visit to a market, an incident that sets off a series of life-altering events in their close-knit community of expats.

10. Girls5Eva, Season 3

Where can I watch it? Netflix

Need a show with a bit of sugar? This Tina Fey-produced musical comedy is the TV equivalent of cotton candy – with a cutting splash of whip-smart wit. Newly saved by Netflix with the release of its third season, the show follows four middle-aged women from a one-hit-wonder ‘90s girl group who decide to try for a comeback after a rapper samples one of their songs. With original music and a stellar cast including singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles, comedy actress Busy Philipps, and Renée Elise Goldsberry of Hamilton fame, it’s got ‘bingeworthy’ written all over it.

11. Palm Royale

Where can I watch it? Apple TV+

Beginning by bringing one of renowned photographer Slim Aarons’ photos to life, Palm Royale is a sun-drenched tale of one woman’s social climb to the height of Palm Beach’s elite. Set in the 1960s, the high society comedy also has quite the all-star lineup, featuring Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Laura Dern (Big Little Lies), Allison Janney (The Help) and supermodel-turned-actor, Kaia Gerber.

12. 3 Body Problem

Where can I watch it? Netflix

A sci-fi saga through and through, prepare to descend on a mind-boggling adventure across continents and timelines in this eight-episode series. Based on Liu Cixin’s Hugo Award-winning Chinese novel The Three-Body Problem, the story kicks off in 1960s China, where astrophysics prodigy Ye Wenjie makes a decision that reverberates through the centuries to the present day, forcing a group of scientists to confront humanity’s greatest threat.

13. Bodkin

Where can I watch it? Netflix

Only Murders in the Building spawned a new genre of podcast-inspired true crime shows, and we’re all the better for it. In Netflix’s new dark comedy series, Bodkin, SNL alum Will Forte plays an American podcast host who travels to a small coastal town in Ireland with a team of armchair detectives to revive a cold case. Alas, as they dig, they discover more bones than they bargained for.
